Essential Tips for 3D Modeling

CAD modeling

Effective CAD (Computer-Aided Design) modeling is less about the tools you use and more about how you structure your workflow to handle changes.

Learn the best practices for creating 3D printable models. Begin with basic shapes (cubes, cylinders, spheres) and block out the overall form first.

Always model with correct proportions. This especially important for 3D printing and product design.

If you are modelling with 3Dprintable.xyz:

  1. Use the Origin. Start your model at the origin and use default planes (XY, YZ, XZ or XOY, YOZ, XOZ) for symmetry. This makes future edits much more predictable.
  2. If a part itself is symmetrical or has repeating holes, only model one and use the Mirror button in the Operations bar.
  3. Generic to Specific. Start with the big shapes before adding small details like holes.
  4. Name your objects and organize your scene. This is a lifesaver if you are modeling something complex.
  5. Save versions of the model frequently using the BREP or STP buttons to import them later with the IMPRT button in the Export bar. Avoid overwriting your progress so you don't get confused. Keep backups of major changes.

If your goal is 3D printing:

  1. Check wall thickness.
  2. Run test prints before finalizing.
